National Safe Place Week

National Safe Place week is March 17-23. This annual week highlights the Safe Place program, which brings together businesses and volunteers to provide immediate help and safety to young people facing abuse, neglect, bullying or other crisis situations. It is a time to raise awareness of Safe Place as an immediate option for youth in crisis and to recognize many valued Safe Place partners that strengthen the national safety net for youth.

So, What Do You Do Again?

A lot of times we get the question, “What exactly does the Youth Community Coalition do?” For such a simple question, at times, it can be hard to give a simple answer. This is because the work of the Youth Community Coalition covers such a broad spectrum. The Coalition addresses substance abuse, education, public safety, mental heath, teen pregnancy, and so much more. While the Coalition cares about specific issues, what lies at the heart of what we do is a passion for Positive Youth Development. This is the idea that kids aren’t divided up by what issues they struggle with, they are whole people, in need of support in every area of their live. Further, it is not about issues, it’s about solutions. It’s not about what makes a child weak, it’s about what makes them strong.

Creating Safe Places in Columbia

The Youth Community, Rainbow House, and dozens of community partners are working together to create safe places in Columbia. On April 18th, 2012, the Safe Place Program will be launched in Columbia, MO. The launch event will take place at Teen Fest in Flatbranch Park from 6-8pm. Check out the national website & watch this short video to find out more about the program and why it’s important.

Columbia- “100 Best Communities”

For the 2nd year in a row, Columbia has been awarded with being one of the best communities for youth. That’s pretty amazing! Come celebrate this occasion on Wednesday, Jan 18 (tomorrow) at 4:30 PM at the Columbia City Council Chambers downtown. You know you want to.

First Night Columbia

With the holidays right around the corner, you might be asking yourself, “What am I going to do for New Years?” How about I give you a suggestion: First Night Columbia. This is an outstanding event that happens in downtown Columbia on New Year’s Eve. It’s complete with live music, dancing, fireworks, and more. There is something for everyone at First Night. So, bring your friends and family and take advantage of this local hot spot.

For Teens:

There is a venue dedicated solely to teen bands from the Mid-Missouri area. There will be awesome live bands, plus a dance party to bring in the New Year. Be there!

A Dose of Prevention for Boone County

During the last week of October, the Youth Community Coalition partnered with multiple agencies to conduct a Prescription Drug Take Back event. This event gives residents the opportunity to safely dispose of old and unwanted medication. The abuse of prescription and over the counter medication is a dangerous trend around the nation. One of the ways to help prevent the abuse of medications is to dispose of medications that you are no longer using and safely store the ones you need to keep.

At the take back events, we collected over 180,000 pills. All together they weigh over 500 pounds! That is a great step forward, but there is so much more to do. We will have another take back event in Spring 2012. If you need to dispose of medications between now and then, we have installed a 24 hour drop box at the Columbia Police Department. Just walk into the main lobby and drop them off!
