Plant the Promise

Every year schools and communities around the nation celebrate Red Ribbon Week.  This week calls communities to unite to prevent substance abuse.

From the National Family Partnership:

“The Red Ribbon Campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. This began the continuing tradition of displaying Red Ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs. The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a DRUG-FREE AMERICA.”

YC2 celebrates this locally by calling students in Columbia to Plant the Promise.  YC2 and community partners distribute hundreds of red tulip bulbs to students and they plant them at prominent places throughout the city.  When students plant their flowers they are encouraged to make a promise to live a drug free life.  In the spring they see a reminder and symbol of that promise, a flower.  That helps students see that the commitment to a drug free life pays off and produces great results.  In 2009, over 1000 tulips were planted in Columbia.
